Avon is the village in the middle of Hatteras Island. Drive south from Nags Head, cross the Marc Basnight Bridge, pass through Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo, and after about 70 miles of two-lane NC-12 bordered by dunes and sound on either side, you reach the one stoplight on the island. That's Avon. ZIP code 27915. Population around 800 year-round, several thousand in July.

    Where Avon sits

Hatteras Island is a thin barrier island roughly 50 miles long. Avon sits near the middle, just north of the famous bend where the coastline turns west toward Cape Point and the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. To the north: Salvo, Waves, Rodanthe, then the bridge back to the northern OBX. To the south: Buxton, Frisco, Hatteras Village, and the free ferry to Ocracoke.

The whole island is inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which is why there are no high-rises, no chain hotels, no boardwalk. Just the village, the dunes, and the beach.

    What Avon is known for

    • Kiteboarding & windsurfing. Avon's sound-side flats are widely considered the best kite spot on the East Coast — shallow, warm, and almost always windy.
    • Surf. Hatteras Island has the most consistent surf in the mid-Atlantic. Avon Pier is a year-round break.
    • The Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. 10 minutes south in Buxton — the tallest brick lighthouse in the US.
    • Fishing. Avon Pier, surf-casting from the beach, and offshore charters out of Hatteras Village.
    • Quiet beaches. Inside the National Seashore the shoreline is wide and undeveloped — easy to find your own stretch even in peak summer.
