Things to Do in Avon NC: Top Outer Banks Activities & Attractions for 2026
Avon, North Carolina is one of the Outer Banks' best-kept secrets. Nestled on the narrow stretch of Hatteras Island, this laid-back beach village offers uncrowded beaches, world-class water sports, and easy access to some of the most iconic attractions on the OBX. Whether you're planning a family vacation, a couples' retreat, or a solo surf trip, here are the best things to do in Avon NC.
Hit the Beach
Avon's beaches are the main attraction — and for good reason. Unlike the busier stretches of the northern Outer Banks, Avon Beach offers wide, uncrowded sand with plenty of room to spread out. The beach is part of Cape Hatteras National Seashore, which means no high-rises, no boardwalks — just miles of pristine coastline. Swimming, boogie boarding, shell collecting, and sandcastle building are all on the daily agenda. Beach access points are scattered along NC Highway 12, and most vacation rentals like King Tide Rising are just a short walk to the sand.
Surfing & Surf Lessons
Hatteras Island is legendary among surfers. The sandbars along Avon and nearby Buxton create consistent, rideable waves that attract surfers from around the world. Whether you're a seasoned pro or a first-timer, there's a break for you. Local surf shops offer board rentals and group lessons for all ages. The area around Avon Pier is a popular spot, and the beaches south toward Cape Hatteras Lighthouse are known for some of the best surf on the East Coast.
Visit Cape Hatteras Lighthouse
Just a 10-minute drive south from Avon in Buxton, the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse is the tallest brick lighthouse in North America at 208 feet. During summer months, you can climb the 257 steps to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Pamlico Sound. Even if you don't climb, the surrounding grounds, museum, and visitor center are worth the visit. It's one of the most photographed landmarks on the entire Outer Banks. See our full Cape Hatteras Lighthouse visitor guide for climbing tickets, hours, and insider tips.
Kiteboarding & Windsurfing at Canadian Hole
Canadian Hole (officially the Haulover Day Use Area) is located between Avon and Buxton on the Pamlico Sound side of the island. It's one of the premier kiteboarding and windsurfing destinations on the East Coast, thanks to shallow, warm water and steady winds. Even if you're not into extreme water sports, it's an incredible spot to watch the action, wade in the calm sound waters, or catch a stunning sunset over the water.
Fishing on Hatteras Island
Hatteras Island is a world-renowned fishing destination. From Avon Pier you can cast a line for bluefish, red drum, flounder, and sea mullet without a boat. For deeper water adventures, charter boats depart from Hatteras Village for offshore trips targeting yellowfin tuna, mahi-mahi, wahoo, and marlin. Surf fishing is also hugely popular — grab a rod and a beach permit and try your luck right from the sand. The fall red drum run (September–November) is legendary among anglers.
Explore Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge
Just north of Avon, Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge is a 13-mile stretch of protected habitat that's a paradise for birdwatchers and nature lovers. Over 365 species of birds have been recorded here, including snow geese, peregrine falcons, and piping plovers. The North Pond Wildlife Trail is an easy 0.5-mile loop with observation platforms overlooking the marshes. It's a peaceful escape and a great morning activity before heading to the beach.
Kayaking & Paddleboarding
The calm waters of Pamlico Sound on the west side of Hatteras Island are ideal for kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding. Several outfitters near Avon offer rentals and guided eco-tours through the marshes and tidal creeks, where you might spot dolphins, sea turtles, herons, and osprey. Sunrise and sunset paddles are especially popular and offer unforgettable views of the Outer Banks landscape.
Stargazing on the Beach
With minimal light pollution, Hatteras Island is one of the best stargazing destinations on the East Coast. On clear nights, you can see the Milky Way stretching across the sky right from the beach. Bring a blanket, lie back on the sand, and enjoy a natural light show. The beaches near Avon and Cape Hatteras National Seashore are particularly dark and excellent for astrophotography.
Shopping & Local Art
Avon has a charming collection of local shops, galleries, and surf boutiques along NC Highway 12. Browse handmade jewelry, OBX-themed souvenirs, original coastal art, and locally crafted goods. Several shops carry Outer Banks apparel and custom surfboard art. It's a great way to spend an afternoon, especially if the weather doesn't cooperate for a beach day.
Family Fun & Kid-Friendly Activities
Avon is incredibly family-friendly. Beyond the beach, kids love crabbing from the sound side docks, flying kites on the wide-open sand, and visiting the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. Mini golf, ice cream runs, and evening bonfires on the beach round out perfect family vacation days. The slower pace of Hatteras Island means less traffic and more quality time — exactly what a beach vacation should be.
Relax at King Tide Rising
Sometimes the best thing to do on vacation is nothing at all. At King Tide Rising, you can soak in the private hot tub, read a book on one of the multiple decks, or grill fresh seafood while watching the sunset. With fast Wi-Fi, smart TVs, and a fully equipped kitchen, it's the perfect home base for your Outer Banks adventure — whether you're out exploring all day or staying in for a restful evening.
