# Driving to Avon, NC — Routes & Drive Times from Every Major Feeder City

Hatteras Island is a drive-market beach. Here's how to get there from the cities most of our guests come from — and when to leave.

[Book Direct →](https://ratherbeproperties.com/property/king-tide-rising/)

Most guests at King Tide Rising drive in. Avon sits about 70 miles south of where you first cross onto the Outer Banks, with the Marc Basnight (Bonner) Bridge over Oregon Inlet as the gateway to Hatteras Island. Below are the real routes and honest drive times from the metros our families come from most.

## From Washington, DC / Northern Virginia

~6 hr 15 min · ~330 mi

**Route:** I-95 S → US-17 S at Fredericksburg → US-64 E across the Albemarle Sound → NC-12 S through the northern OBX → south through Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo → Avon

**Tip:** Hit I-95 before 6 a.m. on a Saturday or you'll lose an hour to Fredericksburg traffic. Many DC families overnight in Williamsburg or Norfolk on the way down.

## From Richmond, VA

~4 hr 30 min · ~250 mi

**Route:** I-64 E to Hampton Roads → I-664 / Monitor-Merrimac → US-17 S → US-158 E into the OBX → NC-12 S → Avon

**Tip:** The Monitor-Merrimac tunnel is usually faster than the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel on summer weekends. Check 511VA before you commit.

## From Hampton Roads / Norfolk / Virginia Beach

~3 hr · ~150 mi

**Route:** I-64 E → Chesapeake Expressway (toll) → US-168 / US-158 → Wright Memorial Bridge → NC-12 S → Avon

**Tip:** Closest major metro — easy enough for a long weekend. Take the Chesapeake Expressway toll to skip the worst of the summer backup on US-17.

## From Raleigh–Durham / Triangle, NC

~4 hr 30 min · ~260 mi

**Route:** US-64 E all the way across the state → over the Croatan and Roanoke Sounds → NC-12 S through Nags Head → south to Avon

**Tip:** US-64 is a straight shot — no interstate detours. Stop in Manteo for lunch before the last hour down Hatteras Island.

## From Charlotte, NC

~7 hr · ~410 mi

**Route:** I-85 N to Greensboro → I-40 E to Raleigh → US-64 E to the OBX → NC-12 S → Avon

**Tip:** Plan an early start. The last 90 minutes down Hatteras Island is the prettiest part of the drive — try to time it for sunset.

## From Philadelphia / South Jersey

~7 hr · ~400 mi

**Route:** I-95 S around DC (or US-301 / Bay Bridge via DE/MD to avoid the Beltway) → US-17 S → US-158 / US-64 to the OBX → NC-12 S → Avon

**Tip:** The Delaware/Maryland US-301 route through the Bay Bridge often beats I-95 through DC on a Friday. Tolls roughly even out.

## From Baltimore, MD

~6 hr · ~330 mi

**Route:** I-95 S → I-695 around DC → US-17 S → into the OBX → NC-12 S → Avon

**Tip:** Use I-695 / I-495 to bypass downtown DC. After Fredericksburg the drive opens up.

## From Pittsburgh, PA

~8 hr 30 min · ~510 mi

**Route:** I-76 / PA Turnpike E → I-70 → I-270 around DC → I-95 / US-17 S → into the OBX → NC-12 S → Avon

**Tip:** Most Pittsburgh families split this into two days, overnighting around Richmond or Norfolk.

## When to leave

- **Best:** Friday evening (arrive late), or before 7 a.m. Saturday.
- **Avoid:** Saturday 10 a.m.–3 p.m. — the entire OBX is turning over and NC-12 backs up south of Nags Head.
- **Sleeper window:** Sunday or Monday arrivals. King Tide Rising offers flexible check-in days when the calendar allows — message us.

## The Hatteras Island stretch

Once you cross the Marc Basnight Bridge you're on NC-12 for the rest of the drive. It's a single road through Pea Island National Wildlife Refuge, Rodanthe, Waves, Salvo, and then Avon. Cell service drops in spots, gas stations thin out — fill up before Nags Head if you're running low.

## The other way in — from the south

If you're coming from coastal NC, SC, or further south, the scenic option is the [free state ferry from Ocracoke to Hatteras Village](/blog/hatteras-ferry-schedule), then a 30-minute drive north on NC-12 to Avon.
