Corolla sits at the far north end of the Outer Banks, beyond Duck. Avon sits roughly in the middle of Hatteras Island, two hours further south. Both are popular vacation-rental villages — but they attract families looking for very different trips.
The short version
- Pick Corolla if you want the shorter drive, more restaurants and shops in walking distance, and don't mind busier summer beaches.

Quick FAQs
Is Avon or Corolla better for families?
Both work for families, but they offer very different trips. Corolla is the most developed northern Outer Banks village — closer for DC and Virginia drivers, more shops and restaurants, busier beaches. Avon is two hours further south, inside Cape Hatteras National Seashore, with wider less-crowded beaches and a quieter village feel.
How far apart are Avon and Corolla?
About 70 miles and 2 hours by car. They're at opposite ends of the Outer Banks — Corolla at the far north, Avon mid-way down Hatteras Island.
Which has better beaches?
Avon. South of Oregon Inlet the shoreline widens considerably, and the entire stretch is federally protected by Cape Hatteras National Seashore — no high-rises, no commercial development behind the dunes. Corolla beaches are nice but narrower and more developed.
Which is better for kiteboarding and surfing?
Avon, no contest. Avon's sound side is the East Coast's premier kiteboarding flat-water spot, and the surf on Hatteras Island is more consistent than the northern beaches.
